Long-time Stafford county residents, Cliff and Donna Carlton, recently moved to their new home in western Stafford county after living in North Stafford for almost 20 years. After recently becoming empty nesters, Donna decided to fulfill her long time dream of opening a bed and breakfast.
Being in such close proximity to multiple historical landmarks, the innkeepers decided it was only appropriate to name the rooms after them. One of two guestrooms is named after the home and studio of Gari Melcher, who lived at Belmont for sixteen years. Gari studied as an artist in Germany and France. His works are displayed all over the world, and his mural works grace the walls of the Library of Congress and Missouri State Capitol. He chaired the commission to establish the National Gallery of Art.
The second of the two guestrooms is the Chatham. The owner and builder William Fitzhugh entertained Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. During the Civil War, the Northern troops used Chatham, with its commanding view of Fredericksburg, as a strategic post. Later, Chatham was used as a war hospital with many signs of suffering that the soldiers endured still evident today. Chatham remained empty for 50 years until it was purchased and restored to her once grandeur.
